Match Report

South Wales Police RFC v Blaengarw RFC

After a week off it was back to League action at Waterton Cross. This week’s visitors were Blaengarw who have been finding the season challenging but they were able to field a full 15 and some on the bench. There was a good turn out for the Police with Mike Williams making his debut in the back row. In fact some late arrivals only made the bench or were out of the squad for the day.

The early pressure was with the Police and it was clear they were on top in all aspects of the game. After good movement from the line out Gerald Hodgson was over for a try 5-0. Then another good run and flanker Joe Maloney was over for another try Captain Ryan Miles added the extras. 12-0

Very soon afterwards Ryan waltzed through the defence and went over under the posts he converted his own try 19-0.This was followed by a powerful drive from a line out nearly to the visitors line the ball was out to Hywel Roberts and with Ryan adding the extras 26-0. It would be fair to say that the Blaengarw team were nothing if not committed and courageous and were rewarded with a penalty after the kick off which put them on the board at 26-3.

However the Police came back and Gerald was over for his second try after a forward drive, 31-3. Then Chris Price was on the score sheet after another forward drive, followed by a pushover try by Joe Maloney. Chris Price crossed again and with Ryan slotting over a further two points the score at half time was 48-3.

The Police made the first of their changes with Matthew Pound replacing Craig Gardner The second half started well when Jac Evans who had been threatening on the wing scored a fine individual try. Then Chris Price was the first of the “engine room” to complete his hat trick when he showed good support for Josh Preece. Ryan made one of the conversions and the Police were now 60-3 in the lead.

Andrew Schmitt came on to replace James Elton who had enjoyed one of his trade mark barn storming games. Then after a little encouragement from the side line second row Gerald Hodgson also completed his hat trick with a close in effort. Vernon Dladla replaced Luke Carpenter at prop and debutant James Bevans also entered the game from the bench.

Unfortunately the referee was forced to bring the game to a premature conclusion when a Blaengarw forward was injured and could not be moved until the arrival of an ambulance. We hope his injury is not too serious and wish him a swift recovery.

Another good performance for the Police building on the efforts at Cowbridge and although they did not get on the score sheet the intelligent running of Josh Miles at 10 , Gareth Morgan at 15 and the power and line out throws of Martin Warren and the power of Rob Evans all helped their team mates achieve this result.

Onward and upward to Hirwaun next Saturday.
