Match Report

HIRWAUN RFC v SWP RFC

SWP RFC v

Previous Match Report

Again it was a much changed side for the rearranged League fixture at Hirwaun. After heavy rain the pitch was a little on the soft and sticky side and although the sun was shining there was a keen and swirling wind.

There were some more new faces in the side with Ben Thomas and Paul Stoldzurg in the backs and the return on permit for former hooker Karl Davies.

Although a greasy ball was hard to gather in the lineouts the Police were holding their own in the tight. There was a promising start when a jinking run by full back Gareth Morgan allowed wing Tom Larkin to make good progress up the pitch. It was a fairly even contest when the Police were penalised for wheeling the scrum and a quick tap caught the defence napping and the home side were ahead 5-0.

The Police remained positive but as the half drew to a close a well worked move by Hirwaun saw them over in the corner and the effort was well converted to make the score 12-0. This also resulted in an injury for Paul Stoldzburg and he was replaced by Simon Baines.

The Police were facing a battering on their line for much of the second half and were forced to concede a number of penalties two of which were successfully converted. However there were also some good driving moves from the Police especially the back row of Sean James, Mike Williams and Jordan Jones. As always Captain Joe Maloney led from the front and there were some good straight running from centres Lee Sims and Ben Thomas.

The home side managed one more try before the whistle with a close range effort and there was a cameo appearance from the bench for coach Paul Standing.

On a personal note stalwart second row Gerald Hodgson made his 100th appearance for the Club.

The players cannot be faulted for their commitment but with over 80 players having worn the shirt this season it is always difficult to establish cohesion in the side. Anyway a break for a week before the visit to Banwen.
